Studying at the String Academy

Learn more about studying in the String Academy.

The String Academy's operates in a simple and effective way. Regular masterclasses support the students' musical studies and significantly enhance their development as musicians throughout the academic year. Instruction is intended as complementary education alongside the student's regular music lessons and home institution.

The String Academy accommodates 20–30 students at a time, ranging in age from 8 to 22. Teaching is centrally organized in Porvoo in collaboration with the Porvoo Region Music Institute. There are 15 to 20 teaching periods each year. Sessions are open to all—anyone is welcome to observe the lessons. Check the dates of upcoming teaching periods.

During the teaching periods, both private and group lessons are offered. Students work in detail on both technical development and the musical works they are currently studying under the guidance of their teachers. Additionally, the String Academy’s activities have been expanded to include chamber music and orchestra training, introduced in March 2020.

Students at the String Academy study regularly with the academy’s instructors, who are top professionals in their respective instruments. Long-term collaboration with the same teachers enables students to work in a goal-oriented, systematic, and ambitious manner. Teaching is primarily conducted in Finnish and, if necessary, in English. Students have the opportunity to work with a pianist during all masterclasses, which significantly enhances the preparation of solo and competition repertoire. The String Academy's resident pianists are Liisa Malmivaara and Martti Rautio.
